During the chat, 34-year-old Ed, who born and grew up in Suffolk, England, England, said that he identifies culturally as Irish. This is probably fair enough because Ed’s father is Irish and comes from Belfast. Ed spends a large part of his childhood in the home country of his father Ireland.
“I great my culture as Irish. I think that’s it with which I grew up,” he said to Louis. “My father’s family is … He has seven brothers and sisters. We would all spend our holidays in Ireland. My first musical experiences were in Ireland, I grew up with tradition in the house. So I identify culturally as Irish, but I was obviously born and grew up in the UK.”
“I don’t rethink it, but I have the feeling that my culture is something that I am really proud of and with which I grew up and with which I expressed,” Ed continued. “And I have the feeling that I don’t necessarily mean in the UK that I only have to be (British).
“I don’t think there are rules. It should be how they feel and how they grew up and what they support themselves,” he continued, and when Louis asked whether he gets “a lot of love” in Ireland, Ed: “It is basically musical.
The headlines were shortened shortly on social media: “Ed Sheeran, he identifies culturally as Irish”, and without the additional context of his father’s inheritance and his childhood in Ireland, people quickly mock the comments of the star.
And on Wednesday, Ed went to his Instagram story to go back in the discourse when he announced a screenshot of a comment that he had left for the haters.
