DMS come to threads, whether they want them or not

Topics, Mark Zuckerberg’s answer to X, have been around for almost two years. And soon users can finally send direct messages (DMS) in the app.

So far, everyone who wanted someone on Threads DM had to jump to Instagram. This problem bypass makes sense -you cannot have a thread account without also having an Instagram account -but switching between apps is a chunky experience, especially on a platform that was created for quick, conversational contributions.

Meta, which has Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp threads, says that it is testing an in-app DM mailing entrance in selected markets, including Hong Kong, Thailand and Argentina. It is planned to continue the feature in the near future.

“Our community has asked for a way to continue their 1: 1 talks without breaking the river by changing to another app,” says a press release. “By leading the conversation in the app, we facilitate users to connect with the perspectives of the other and to build on the perspectives of the other.”

Some users seem to be striving for DMS. A contribution with the sound: “Wishes threads would have a DM because I would like to speak to some of them,” said over 375 likes.

But not everyone is on board. Many threads users actually seem to enjoy the DM-free simplicity of the platform. In a post on June 3 with more than 600 likes and 100 reposts it says: “I love that threads do not have a DMS TBH.” The answers repeated the feeling: “DM-free threads are the reason why I can actually enjoy posting again,” said a user. Another wrote: “That’s why I never go.” In a popular post, it is easy: “Reasons why I love threads 1 – nobody can do you” and thousands of likes.

Will people accept DMS on threads? Time will say. But whether they are excited or fear, one thing is certain: they come.
